Semarang, 25 Oktober 2023—Master program in Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University for the first time conducted a soft skill workshop under the theme “Corpus Linguistics as an Alternative Research Methodology”. The event is only for students of the Linguistic program so that they have knowledge about corpus linguistics as a current alternative method.
The workshop is held by hybrid, as 25 students attend offline in Ruang Sidang Besar FIB Undip and 7 students joined by Zoom. This workshop started from 7.30 till 10.30 West Indonesia Time. A speaker in that event was Gede Primahadi Rajeg, Ph.D. from Universitas Udayana and the moderator was Prihantoro, Ph.D. from Universitas Diponegoro. The speaker was a person who was concerned with computation techniques and quantitative corpus linguistics in studying language-based text-digital databases (it is called “language corpora”).
The event started with an opening speech from The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of Undip, Dr. Nurhayati, M.Hum. and an opening speech from The Head of the Master Program in Linguistics, Dr. Agus Subiyanto, M.A. After that, the event continued by presenting materials by Dr. Primahardi and continued with a Q&A session. Not just a webinar, participants were also guided on how to analyze corpus data in https://cqpweb.lancs.ac.uk/ with Microsoft Excel. Basically, in the corpus linguistics approach, a researcher is able to use existing data or design new data.
“This workshop was very interesting for me because it gave me more new knowledge that I had never well-known before. Furthermore, I hope an event like this is held offline so that participants and speakers can be more interactive,” said one of them Linguistics students.
