Semarang, April 26, 2024 – The Master of Linguistics Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Diponegoro University, is proud to present an international seminar entitled “The Importance of Pragmatic Competence in Language Teaching and Learning”. This seminar presents a guest speaker from the University of Otago, New Zealand, namely Prof. Minh Thi Thuy Nguyen, Ph.D, an expert in the field of pragmatics and language teaching. This activity will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024, starting at 14.30 to 16.30 WIB in the FIB UNDIP Meeting Room.
In this seminar, Prof. Minh Thi Thuy Nguyen will discuss the importance of pragmatic competence in language teaching and learning. Pragmatic competence is the ability to use language appropriately in various social and cultural contexts. This topic is very relevant in the current era of globalization, where cross-cultural communication skills are becoming increasingly important.
This seminar aims to improve the understanding of language educators and researchers regarding the important role of pragmatic competence in language learning. On the other hand, this seminar is also expected to contribute to the development of a more effective language teaching curriculum that is in line with the needs of the times. Participants will gain insight into how pragmatics can interact in teaching to improve students’ language skills, both orally and in writing.
Pragmatic competence is not only related to the ability to use language grammatically, but also how language is used to achieve certain communication goals in different social contexts. This includes the ability to understand implicit meanings, adapt to social norms in conversation, and use language in various situations.
