Semarang—MLi Undip conducted a guest lecture on Friday, 20 October 2023. This event invited two speakers; Prof. Dr. Oktavianus, M.Hum., lecturer of Universitas Andalas and Prof. Dr. Mulyadi, M.Hum., lecturer of Universitas Sumatera Utara. The theme of this event is “Current Research Issues in Natural Semantic Metalanguage and Landscape Linguistics”. Prof. Oktavianus provided many research objects as examples that can be developed as well-written language in public areas. He stated that: language became a commodity, which means that unique language selection is prioritized in public areas.
Participants in this event are everyone, such as students, lecturers, academicians, and the public. This guest lecture was continued by a presentation from Prof. Dr. Mulyadi, M.Hum. which focused on the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) framework. As well as written language use in public areas, there are a lot of issues of current research in NSM that are full of challenges to be researched, for example, humor, artifacts, animals, imperative, transitive, case-marking, and many others. Prof. Mulyadi affirmed that those topics could be analyzed from NSM’s perspective, even though researchers have been using a perspective of language typology.
According to this guest lecture which discussed micro-linguistics and macro-linguistics, hopefully, students and academicians mainly focusing on the field of linguistics can explore more and more studies related to NSM and landscape linguistics. Furthermore, we hope this event becomes an inspiration for current research.
